solorpg quick tutorial
in the end, playing solo rpgs can be as simple or as complex as you want
you can go the extreme route!
play the game asking questions about what's going on, no other system, nothing, and roll 1d6
like, "can my character, who is called Armistice International, by the way, try to pick this lock?"
"does she succeed at it?"
some manuals suggest only asking 'positive' questions, like, avoiding things like "do I fail at it?" or "is the room empty?"
but you can do so if you want
then you roll one regular, common dice, six sided, a cube
and the result is your answer!
1 means no, and
2 means no
3 means no, but
4 means yes, but
5 means yes
6 means yes, and
being ultra simplistic,
and means something else, or extra intensity, duration, etc, are added. so it's an extra yes or an extra no.
for example, "can I hit this arrow in that guy over there?" "no, and..." now you make up what this means. yeah, solo means you gonna have to go creative sometimes.
"no, and not only you don't have the skill for it, he has a special armor that makes him invulnerable to arrows!" now that's true.
but means the other way around. it's a yes, but not so much. it's a now, but there's something to make it less bad"
do I hit my arrow?
no, but... maybe if take a while, I will. somebody could spot me tho!
some people like to take notes about the game. others make very compelling notes. up to you. somepeople don't write nothing down and, if they forget something, so be it. no problem. it's your game. you don't have to please anyone. some people enjoy taking notes using a different approach, such as drawing, audio notes or bothering their friends at parties.
some people may want a bit of complexity, they think this can be too random. you can make this a bit more convoluted just by adding advantages and disadvantages. if the situation favors a "yes" answer, roll 2d6 (two cubes) and the biggest number is the one to be considered. if the situation favors a "no" answer, same thing: roll 2d6, but consider only the smallest number. there. added complexity.
but my character need more detailing!
ok, give them 3 characteristics they will always have advantage (things like fantasy race, class, profession, whatever)
give them one bad thing where they will always roll with disadvantage
by this point, you're basically playing solo "Freeform Universal RPG", which is an actual game.
if you wanna go further, maybe add this little engine to a regular game you already know and love.
you may want to search for tools to generate random dungeons, for example. or random... spacecrafts. random mysteries.
if you want more complexity for the random answers, mythic 2e is a great bet!
and if you want more complexity for combat simulation, hacking, then you just grab a regular ttrpg that has that, and... plug it in your game.
this is the route "traditional ttrpg + solo rpg oracles".
there is another route, the "solo ttrpg", which means a game created for solo. you can try, for example, ironsworn. it's fun, it's complete and it's free!

this is not complete yet. sorry. there are many notes. many are not appropriate to this place. many have many lines and such

Guys, usually when people play solo, they follow these paths:
1. Gamebook, in the style of Fighting Fantasy
2. Dungeon Crawlers/HexCrawlers (more like board games without components than actual RPGs), like Four Against Darkness
3. RPG with an oracle (either a system designed for solo play, or an adapted system with a special oracle), like D&D with Mythic
4. Board games, like Isofarian Guard
5. Journaling games
Out of these 5, only the third offers more narrative freedom, allowing the player to create the world and the story.
When you go for the other types, do you miss this possibility of choice and creation?
If so, what attracts you to these types of games?
If any game provided this possibility, do you think it would add to the experience or make it worse? (Like: I don't want so much rolling to create the story of my gamebook, I just want to read it and make choices!)
I'm asking to try to better understand some personal projects.

Some players in the community use Obsidian to play and organize solo games (And other games). Some parts of it require some setup, so I thought it was appropriate to make a guide and make some pointers.
You can see help and how to use Obsidian by default here: https://help.obsidian.md/Home
However, Obsidian can have expanded capabilities, using Community Plugins. Here are some plugins that we use and how to use them.
1. Dice Roller. As the name implies, it allows you to roll dice inside of Obsidian. You can open a sidebar where you can roll dice, write rolls in your own notes and even roll directly from tables. Check the instructions here: https://plugins.javalent.com/Dice+Roller/Dice+Roller
2. MythicGME-2e-Obsidian: Not a plugin, but it needs the Inline Scripts plugin. It allows you to write commands on your notes designed to access solo game tools. Check the install instructions here: https://github.com/Zhrack/MythicGME-2e-Obsidian. All commands start with ;; and end with ::. It also shows you snippets of what commands are available as you are writing them, so don't worry too much about remembering them.
After installing it, here are some useful commands:
- XdY+Z: Like Dice Roller, it allows you to roll dice in the notes themselves. Less configurable, but easier to use and the result is left written instead of rerolling when the note is loaded again.
- There are many commands related to creating and moving card decks:
- cards pile creates a new empty deck, with a specific name, if they are facing up or down and if, when cards are removed, the cards show in the note when the command is executed.
- cards fromfolder allows you to fill an already created deck with the images in a folder. Note: if the folder has spaces on the route, you should surround the path with "".
- cards shuffle allows you to shuffle the deck of cards. You can also choose if you want to rotate the cards.
- cards draw allows you to remove a specified amount of cards from a source deck and moves it to a destination pile.
- cards pick allows you to choose what cards to move from a source deck to a destination deck
- cards open viewer opens a sidebar that allows you to see all your decks.
- cards remove allows you to delete a deck.
- There are many other commands, and we honestly don't know how to use all of them! Check the help command and the MythicGME-2e-Obsidian Readme to see tutorials and other commands.

As promised, here's a good explanation of how the 1978 Magic Realm game uses a combination of "2d6-keep-highest" plus "1 = best results, 6 = worst results" as a way to make tables and dice rolling both simple and potentially epic at the same time. I didn't write this — just sharing it!

Need some suggestions about dungeon maps. Dungeon maps of which artist/publisher do you like the best and/or use the most (considering you use dungeon/battle maps)?
Nestor
What do you expect from this kind of tools? How much granularity do you want when exploring a corridor? See an entire section even if your pcs can't see beyond 30 feet from the torch? See only 30' sections? Discover it more progressively as you go, rather than in sections? 10' grid scale or 5' grid scale?
Dedicated to dungeon design only or also master emulator? as universal as possible or a whole game with its own original rules, oracles and setting, expandable beyond the Dungeon crawler?
Thanks for any answer, without cutting yourself short. Sometimes the idea that seems simplest or silliest ends up inspiring genius, or the criticism that seems most superfluous ends up hitting the nail on the head.

Can someone please recommend an oracle that works with Tarot cards? I bought a Paris Catacombs Tarot deck because I know it is a good oracle method.
Vinnie
Ok, I’m going to show how to use Fablemaker's Animated Tarot to spice up your characters.
The game I’m going to use is called Salvage Union, by Leyline Press. Setting is a post apocalyptic Earth where people use mechs to salvage broken tech, fight giant monsters and corporations. Fablemakers is geared towards being used in D&D 5e, so I want to use it in a whole different setting just to show it can be used with anything (I actually have used it for a Call of Cthulhu character and a Mothership character).

For the beginner soloists, here is a beginner friendly solo game I just tried. If you tend to not like journaling style games, don't worry, you can play this one without journaling anything and still be satisfied. It's a sci-fi themed game. It has a nice game loop, not too complicated but not too simple either. If you like sci-fi and looking for an easy entry to solo rpgs, give Entity a try.
"In Entity, you step into the role of an AI synthetic astronaut, finding yourself stranded within an enigmatic expanse filled with alien ruins. These grand, intricate edifices are the remnants of long forgotten civilizations, silent keepers of history steeped in mystery"

I'm trying to keep off the screens at night, when I have time and I'd like to print here in college, they'll do a nice price for me to print in bulk (I don't have a printer at home). I'll print a lot and let it stares at me so I play them'all.
So... I'd like suggestions to print besides 4AD, Scarlet Heroes and Basic Fantasy.. Some book on Gm emulation or tables to help like Mythic would be good for me? Or another book?

Hi all. After a couple of days spectating, might as well say hi and ask your knowledgeable minds for advice.
I've already had a look around even at the beginner resources you've posted, but... as with the other colourful room, if you don't know what you're after, you're very likely to get utterly lost 😅 (this could be a game setting in itself... find a suitable game amongst all of that)
